Trump says Walmart should bear costs and not pass on tariff increases to consumers

U.S. President Trump's tariff policy has had an impact on the global economy and trade, and has also had a huge impact on the domestic retail industry in the United States. When the U.S. retail giant Walmart announced its financial report on the 15th, it warned that the U.S. government's tariff policy has caused commodity prices to rise in April and May. Since many tariff increases have not yet taken effect, commodity prices may rise even more in the future. In response to this, Trump posted a message on the "Truth Social" on the 17th to criticize Wal-Mart, saying that Wal-Mart made billions of dollars last year, far exceeding expectations.

Trump bluntly stated in a social post that Walmart should stop blaming tariffs for the price increases in the entire supply chain. "Walmart made billions of dollars last year, far exceeding expectations." Trump emphasized that Walmart and China should "absorb the cost of tariffs themselves" rather than passing these costs on to customers. Trump said: "I will be watching this closely, and so will your customers!"

According to "Reuters", in response to Trump's statement, Walmart responded that the company has always been committed to providing consumers with the lowest possible prices and this policy will not change. "Under the reality that retail profit margins are extremely limited, we will keep prices as low as possible."

Walmart CEO Doug McMillon said on the 15th that due to razor-thin retail profits, retailers cannot fully absorb all tariff costs. However, he mentioned that tariffs mainly affect non-food products from China and promised that Walmart would not increase food prices as a result.
