Qatar’s big order worth 7.4 trillion, buying 210 Boeing aircraft for 2.9 trillion

Recently, it was reported that U.S. President Donald Trump had accepted a 747-8 Big Mac jet worth US$400 million (approximately NT$12.1 billion) from the Middle Eastern country Qatar, which will serve as Air Force One, causing an uproar in the United States. On the occasion of Trump's visit to the Middle East, Qatar Airways signed an agreement with the US Boeing Company on the 14th to purchase up to 210 Boeing aircraft worth US$96 billion (approximately NT$2.9 trillion). In addition, Qatar Airways signed an agreement with GE Aerospace to provide more than 400 engines for Boeing aircraft.

According to foreign media reports, Trump announced economic transactions totaling more than $243.5 billion (approximately NT$7.4 trillion) between the United States and Qatar, including the sale of Boeing aircraft and GE Aviation engines to Qatar Airways.

Boeing CEO Kelly Ortberg signed the order with Qatar Airways CEO Badr Mohammed Al-Meer in Doha, the capital of Qatar, on Wednesday. Trump and Qatar's King Tamim bin Hamad Al-Thani witnessed the event. Trump emphasized that this is the largest aircraft order in Boeing's history.

Qatar Airways and Boeing said the order is the largest in Qatar Airways history and includes 130 Boeing 787 Dreamliners and 30 777X wide-body aircraft, in addition to options for 50 aircraft. Qatar Airways also signed an agreement with GE Airways to provide more than 400 engines for Boeing aircraft.

Boeing and Qatar Airways reached the agreement during Trump's state visit to Qatar as part of his four-day trip to the Middle East.

The White House assessed the deal at $96 billion, stating that "this is the largest wide-body aircraft order in Boeing's history and the largest order for 787 aircraft in history." It also said that the deal will create 154,000 jobs in the United States every year and create a total of more than 1 million domestic jobs.

Qatar recently proposed to Trump a gift of a 747-8 Big Mac jet worth US$400 million as the new "Air Force One" for the US president. The Democratic Party was angry about this gift plan and criticized it as "not only naked corruption, but also a serious national security threat."
