Entering the Behind-the-Meter Energy Storage Market to Optimize Cost Control

#AI Electric energy storage cost-saving system

All-round Renewable Energy Brand, United Renewable Energy (3576), participated in the 2024 Taiwan International Smart Energy Week.

Aside from showcasing new products, they also revealed this year's expanded investment in the behind-the-meter energy storage business. With rising industrial electricity prices making green energy more competitive, Taiwan's smart energy market continues to grow. Irene Chen, United Renewable Energy's Public Affairs and Sustainability Manager and Acting Spokesperson, explained that United Renewable Energy, being a manufacturing company, also faces challenges in electricity dispatch. Taking advantage of this, they have set up energy storage cabinets at their Tainan plant to provide a reference model for corporate energy management.

In addition to its presence in the front-of-the-meter energy storage market, United Renewable Energy has also set up a 4MW energy storage demonstration facility at its Tainan plant, expected to be completed in the first half of 2025.

The company is also participating in Taipower's real-time reserve service, which is expected to become a new revenue source. United Renewable Energy stated that this system can store energy during off-peak hours and use it when electricity costs are higher during peak hours, creating a more efficient power usage environment for customers. The target customers are large electricity users and traditional industries. United Renewable Energy will provide a complete behind-the-meter energy storage system service.

United Renewable Energy emphasizes that the application of behind-the-meter energy storage can effectively utilize electricity price differences to adjust power demand.

Energy can be stored during off-peak hours and released during peak hours, thus saving on electricity costs. Irene Chen illustrated that off-peak electricity prices might be around NT$2, while peak prices could reach over NT$8. Through the energy storage system, companies can flexibly respond to price fluctuations, achieving cost balance. This not only meets their own needs but also serves as a model for other companies.

Irene Chen pointed out that the Tainan plant focuses on behind-the-meter energy storage technology, complemented by the existing solar panels to achieve better results.

The aim is to introduce this solution to more large electricity users through collaboration with manufacturers. Chen explained that this field had previously seen limited investment, but with the increase in Taipower's electricity prices, the demand for green energy and energy storage from enterprises has been growing. The market potential is considerable. United Renewable Energy has comprehensive solutions and plans to attract more customers by promoting the demonstration at the Tainan plant.
